Met dit handboek over het Belgische gevangeniswezen wordt een breed zicht geboden op de vrijheidsberovende straffen en de penitentiaire instellingen die deze uitvoeren. Voor vele professionals die werken binnen het veld van de strafrechtspleging (politie, advocaten, magistraten, ambtenaren, hulpverleners) is het gevangeniswezen een 'blinde vlek' in hun kennis van de strafrechtsgang. A fortiori is de informatie over de strafuitvoering en in het bijzonder de gevangenisstraf bij het grote maar dikwijls geïnteresseerd publiek quasi nihil. Met dit handboek nemen de auteurs zich voor de lezer te introduceren in de belangrijkste thema's van dit onderwerp.
